GERRICK KING, FOUNDER /OWNER
BACKGROUND
With a master's degree in Exercise Physiology with a concentration in Performance Enhancement and Injury prevention and over 10 years of training experience, Gerrick takes pride in helping you reach your fitness goals, no matter what your starting point is. Gerrick grew up in a family of competitive swimmers, so he was taught the importance of work ethic and discipline at a very early age. He earned his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in Exercise Science and Psychology. While studying at Rutgers University, he interned at TEST Sports Club and Football Academy, where he was initially exposed to the world of Strength and Conditioning. He helped train NFL Combine prospects in preparation for the 2015 NFL Draft - Notable Athletes - Justin Hardy, WR - Atlanta Falcons. After graduating, he simultaneously developed a personal training department from the ground up at a start-up gym Zapp Fitness while studying for his Master's degree in Exercise Physiology at California University of Pennsylvania. Through these experiences, he was quickly recruited by Equinox in New York City. Within a year, Gerrick had a trained notable clients like Luke Sherwin - CEO of Casper. While working in the city, his training clients in New Jersey begged him to come back on the weekends to train them so he started a weekend bootcamp service called NJ Strength Lab. This was the spark that created his entrepreneural spirit. Shifting gears to business - Gerrick got hired as a Program Manager for EXOS, where he was positioned with Prudential in Newark, NJ and then American Express in New York City. At EXOS, Gerrick created work place fitness initiatives to improve the quality of life for corporate workers. Then he decided to open King Strength and Performance, the rest is history. Rob is fine, it’ll save us time. From client to trainer to business partner and friend: that’s the Cliffnotes version of how I met Gerrick. Now I use the skills and experience from my eclectic background (software project & product management, to marketing, to operations for small businesses) alongside Gerrick’s to manage the gym and help people get stronger for a lifetime. Taekwondo, judo, Muay Thai, Krav Maga. College badminton. Obstacle course racing (Spartan multi-Trifectas, Ultras). Endurance events like SEALFIT 20X, GORUCK, Bonefrog. And now experimenting by pairing consistent strength training with endurance. WHY I TRAIN Physical autonomy and longevity: so I can do whatever I’m interested in with the least chances of injury, for as long as possible. I want to be the Asian grandpa doing easy one-arm chin-ups at the park. And yes, I’d like to look good too. BACKGROUND + HOW I GOT INTO FITNESS
I was formally a dancer, color guard instructor and CrossFit enthusiast. I met Gerrick at the first gym we worked at where I was hired as a Zumba Instructor. Not long after, I became his loyal client, turned friend and with Gerrick’s encouragement, I became a certified personal trainer. CERTIFICATIONS & DEGREES A.S. You can find me at the gym jumping around, dancing between sets or trying to find my iPhone. |

I got introduced to fitness through wrestling & football in high school. Then I continued my journey with fitness during my service in the Marine Corps. That led me to studying exercise science/Pre-Physical Therapy after I was discharged. I was a swim team coach, former competitive swimmer and lifeguard so being active and helping others has been apart of my life for a long time. I planned to go to grad school for occupational therapy but did not feel that path was right for me personally. I currently am working the clinical side of health as well, but know that so much physical and mental benefits can be achieved through exercise and want to share that knowledge. At a young age, I always wanted to be able to rep out 100 push-ups with ease. At that time, my dad was very big into bodybuilding, and while I was also always active with baseball from T-ball to college, staying in shape has always been a priority to me. Over the last 3 years, I’ve become more interested in the science and progress of others in bodybuilding/training. I plan to continuously try to grow my education and inspire/help others in their process. BACKGROUND + WHY I GOT INTO FITNESS
As a kid I always played sports and watched football. Fitness began at a young age, general running and push-ups turned into garage workouts with my dad. I went into high school dreaming of making it big in the NFL, that changed after I sustained a serious shoulder injury that I’m still rehabbing to this day. My goal from that day on was to make sure that didn’t happen to anyone else. I am still learning new things about the fitness world everyday and love every minute of it.
